Portrait of George Benson

Bill Mathis, former college and professional football star, has been working in the securities industry since his retirement from the NFL in 1971. He opened the Bear Sterns office in Atlanta in 1972 and since that time has continued a successful career in securities and real estate development. Bill is currently employed with Sterne, Agee, & Leach, Inc.

He began his football career in 1960 as one of the original New York Titans. He played his entire career with the New York franchise and is one of only 10 AFL Career players. Bill was one of four Titans who remained with the Jets until their Super Bowl III victory against the Indianapolis Colts. He was twice named an AFL all-star and led the league in carries in 1961. Since his football career, he has been inducted into the Clemson University, South Carolina and Georgia Hall of Fames. In addition, Bill served as President for the Clemson Foundation Finance Committee from 1972-1980.

Bill currently resides in Atlanta, GA with his wife Burnsie, but spends much of his time on their family farm in Griffin, GA. He is a member of the Capital City Club in Atlanta, the Waterfall Country Club in Rabun County, and a supporter of the Mt. Paran Church of God. Bill and Burnsie have a son, Billy, who is a graduate of SMU and currently lives in Atlanta.
